Hermitage site

  • Villanueva del Rey

The Yacimiento del Ermitaño is located about two kilometers southwest of Villaharta, on the Ermitaño hill. It is an archaeological site belonging to the Chalcolithic period, dated approximately between 2500 and 2000 B.C., which allows us to approach the first communities settled in this territory.

Several materials of daily use have been recovered at this site, such as flint flakes, thickened rim plates, globular vessels and pots. These findings are part of the household goods of a human group that inhabited the area more than four thousand years ago, providing information about their way of life, their activities and their relationship with the environment.

Nearby, to the west of the Don Juan mine, in Puerto Cacho, several large megalithic tombs from the same Chalcolithic period have also been documented. All this makes this environment an area of great interest to understand the prehistory of Villaharta and the Guadiato Valley.
