Dolmen of Casas de Don Pedro

  • Belmez

The Dolmen Casas de Don Pedro, located in the dolmen necropolis of Sierra Palacios, is one of the great prehistoric testimonies of Belmez. It is part of the set of thirteen dolmens documented in the municipality and is the only one currently discovered and visitable.

Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) in 1996, this megalithic monument dates back to the Neolithic period, around 4500 B.C. Its trapezoidal chamber, built with large orthostats of local materials such as limestone, sandstone, pudinga, micasquisto and quartzite, preserves the essence of ancient collective funerary constructions.

The dolmen was surrounded by a ring of river cobbles and micaschist slabs, originally covered by an earthen mound. In its interior were found skeletal remains of several individuals and materials such as copper awls, arrowheads, flint blades and fragments of decorated pottery, indicating that it was used at different times.

Integrated in the signposted route “Landscapes with History”, the Casas de Don Pedro Dolmen is an essential visit to discover the origins of settlement in the Guadiato Valley.
