Carmelo Coat

  • Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo

El Abrigo Carmelo is one of the most unique archaeological sites in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo. Inside are preserved three groups of schematic cave paintings, made in reddish tones, which allow us to approach the first symbolic manifestations of the prehistoric communities that inhabited this territory.

These figures, painted on the walls of the shelter, are part of the valuable rock art heritage of the Guadiato Valley. Their historical and cultural interest has motivated restoration and protection actions promoted by the Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo Town Council and the Department of Culture of the Andalusian Regional Government.

El Abrigo Carmelo is a visit especially recommended for those who wish to discover the most ancient past of the region and to see an exceptional example of rock art in the heart of the Sierra Morena of Cordoba.
