Cerro de la Coja Archaeological Area

  • Obejo

Cerro de la Coja is one of the most emblematic sites in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo. In addition to being one of the highest peaks in the town, its name is closely linked to the origin of the toponym of the municipality, which gives it a special historical and symbolic value.

Excavated in different campaigns between 1955 and 2002, this archaeological site preserves important remains from the Roman period. Among them, we can highlight some high imperial baths built during the mandate of Augustus, later reformed in the time of Tiberius and abandoned around the second century AD. C. Next to them are also documented two cisterns from the Augustan period, linked to the supply and management of water.

Due to its archaeological, historical and scenic interest, the Cerro de la Coja allows us to approach the Roman past of the area and understand the strategic importance of this enclave within the territory of the Guadiato Valley.
