Belmez Castle

  • Belmez

Belmez Castle stands on an imposing limestone rock that dominates the town and offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Guadiato Valley, overlooking nearby towns such as Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, Espiel and Fuente Obejuna.

Possibly of Arab origin, with references that place it around the year 861, the castle retains elements from different historical periods. The main tower and part of the wall correspond to reforms after the fifteenth century, reflecting its strategic importance over time.

For centuries, the fortress was the scene of conflicts between Muslims, Christians and, later, French troops. In 1316, during the Christian repopulation, it resisted a Muslim siege, consolidating its defensive role in the area. In 1961 important restoration works were carried out that contributed to its preservation.

The access to the castle, known as Acceso Rafael Canalejo, adds a special attraction to the visit. Every May it is decorated on the occasion of the Courtyards, Grilles and Corners Contest, an event in which this environment has won several awards.
