Virgen de la Estrella Chapel

  • Espiel

There is news of this hermitage in 1564, in which it appears as a hermit a certain Fray Bartolomé de Trujillo and in 1589 1591, in which some works were made in the roofs and in the house of the santero. Located in a picturesque spot 3 km from the village. As in the parish of San Sebastian, there is a single nave with pointed transverse arches, although it is of narrower proportions and therefore the effect of verticality is accentuated. Some brick piers, a public of impressive simplicity and the total whitewashing of walls and arches give the whole a rustic and austere stamp, Despite its greater simplicity, even its rustic character, it has the interest of being preserved in its original state without major changes, still seeing its wooden ceiling with beams. The square and vaulted chevet, however, is due to later works, from the Baroque period. It emerges as a prismatic tower at the end of the hermitage, whose exteriors are enveloped by the dependencies of the titular Brotherhood and by a front portico. Under this one a doorway opens in so pointed arch as those of the interior.
