The essentials Rambla

One of the most iconic urban areas in Figueres. This tree-lined avenue that’s lively at all times of the day becomes a privileged setting for fairs, festivals and cultural events throughout the year.

Since 1831, La Rambla de Figueres has covered the Galligans stream, which had previously been a workspace and waste disposal site near the medieval wall. Renovated in 1917-1918 to its current appearance, it was and remains a central meeting point, an agora, a symbol of the city, a place for strolling, and a hub for cafés and shops. Today, it hosts numerous fairs, cultural events, and gastronomic festivals throughout the year.

Around La Rambla, the city’s bourgeois families built grand homes in Neoclassical or Modernism styles. Among them, the Albert Terrades House (1767) stands out, later becoming the Hotel París and, since 1982, home to the Toy Museum of Catalonia. La Rambla also features the monument to the Figueres-born inventor of the submarine, Narcís Monturiol (1819-1885), and the sculpture “Portrait of Dalí,” which plays with the reflection of the surrealist artist’s face.
